Would You Vote To Legalize Marijuana In The United States?
I think it would solve alot of problems. The government could tax it to help settle budget problems and there would be less dealing and crimes on the streets. Besides don’t the police have better things to do than to worry about marijuana? Do you think we will ever live to see it legalized?

Yes

Hemp fiber paper resists decomposition, and does not yellow with age when an acid-free process is used. Hemp paper more than 1,500 years old has been found. It can also be recycled more times.

Industrial Hemp in the United States: Status and Market Potential
HEMP FACTS
1) Hemp is among the oldest industries on the planet, going back more than 10,000 years to the beginnings of pottery. The Columbia History of the World states that the oldest relic of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC.
2) Presidents Washington and Jefferson both grew hemp. Americans were legally bound to grow hemp during the Colonial Era and Early Republic. The federal government subsidized hemp during the Second World War and US farmers grew about a million acres of hemp as part of that program.
3) Hemp Seed is far more nutritious than even soybean, contains more essential fatty acids than any other source, is second only to soybeans in complete protein (but is more digestible by humans), is high in B-vitamins, and is 35% dietary fiber. Hemp seed is not psychoactive and cannot be used as a drug. See TestPledge.com
4) The bark of the hemp stalk contains bast fibers which are among the Earth’s longest natural soft fibers and are also rich in cellulose; the cellulose and hemi-cellulose in its inner woody core are called hurds. Hemp stalk is not psychoactive. Hemp fiber is longer, stronger, more absorbent and more insulative than cotton fiber.
5) According to the Department of Energy, hemp as a biomass fuel producer requires the least specialized growing and processing procedures of all hemp products. The hydrocarbons in hemp can be processed into a wide range of biomass energy sources, from fuel pellets to liquid fuels and gas. Development of biofuels could significantly reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and nuclear power.
6) Hemp grows well without herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. Almost half of the agricultural chemicals used on US crops are applied to cotton.
7) Hemp produces more pulp per acre than timber on a sustainable basis, and can be used for every quality of paper. Hemp paper manufacturing can reduce wastewater contamination. Hemp’s low lignin content reduces the need for acids used in pulping, and it’s creamy color lends itself to environmentally friendly bleaching instead of harsh chlorine compounds. Less bleaching results in less dioxin and fewer chemical byproducts.
9) Hemp fiberboard produced by Washington State University was found to be twice as strong as wood-based fiberboard.
10) Eco-friendly hemp can replace most toxic petrochemical products. Research is being done to use hemp in manufacturing biodegradable plastic products: plant-based cellophane, recycled plastic mixed with hemp for injection-molded products, and resins made from the oil, to name just a very few examples.
Absolutely.
I recently did a lot of research on cannabis, and the more I read, the more shocked I became that it is illegal. I recommend “Why Marijuana Should Be Legal” to anyone who doubts the ridiculous misconceptions and lies perpetrated by anti-drug organizations and the U.S. government. It is extremely concise and informative.
I’ll answer this the way I always answer. I choose not to drink, I don’t like what it does to me. I choose to smoke, legal or not. I’m fifty four own a business and work every day but I’m a criminal because my government says I am. I choose not to agree with their reality. For all those opposed, do you really think/believe that weed being illegal is working? Want to know where to get some, ask your local teenagers, the ones you are insisting you are protecting. One other thing, there are lots of people on the roads smoking weed. So drink up, drive drunk and point your finger at me. Hypocrites.
While I would gladly vote to legalize, I believe one of the biggest stumbling blocks to the success of true legalization is the very “government tax”concept you mention. It’s a weed, it grows anywhere. Unlike tobacco, which is processed, blended and packaged, or alcohol which is made from other substances (fruit, grain, etc.) fermented and packaged, marijuana (more correctly called cannabis) is a natural product. You grow it, pick it, dry it and smoke it. End of story. It grows anywhere and doesn’t require further processing before use, and that is the biggest reason the governement would have a time of it if they tried to tax it. In order to tax, you need control. How does one control a weed that anyone, anywhere in the world, can grow indoors or out?
That said, legalization in and of itself would cause drastic reductions in the funding required by this arcane law. Law enforcement could spend their money better protecting folks from real criminals. Our courts and jails would be less crowded. Rehab centers could concentrate on those people who are truly addicted to various drugs rather than fulfilling a legal requirement for people who opt for rehab over jail time when caught with this fairly benign plant. DARE and similar programs could lose the propaganda they preach about pot and perhaps lend truth to what they teach about truly dangerous drugs. I believe the only reason they call pot a “gateway” drug is because once kids discover the lies they’ve been told about pot, they think everything else they were taught is a lie so they go on and try other, more dangerous substances.
More states are recognising the medical benefits of the drug, more and more countries throughout the world are decriminalizing. Responsible adults should be able to use cannabis responsibly. I vote “Yes” and HOPE to see it legal in my lifetime!
i think it should be legal because it’s safer then alcohol and that’s legal so why not have weed legal
no i don’t think i’ll live to see weed legal and i’m only 18
Yes.
Absolutely. And even if I didn’t have an opinion about it already I would be convinced about this issue by the all valid, intelligent, well-researched points here about why marijuana should be legal.
The people who are against it seem to be… a little heavy on the propaganda.
So many of the people who answered in favor are correct….it appears to be safer than alcohol, at least insofar as it doesn’t “hurt” other people (at least, not directly)—doesn’t increase crime, or make people do risky or dangerous things as alcohol and so many other drugs do.
I still don’t think it should be legal, because then all you would do is to cause many more people who would stay away from something illegal, to use it. What’s the problem with that?
Well, marijuana completely saps ambition for one thing. True, the people who are addicted to it do not care. They really are not sharp enough thinkers to care. They are too mellow to worry or have the kind of impetus or drive that causes people to go out and earn a living, raise a family, contribute to society and the economy.
Yes, I do know people who smoke pot regularly who are raising families….or at least, who have children. Basically as far as parenting, these people are just “phoning it in.” They can’t help it. It’s not a conscious decision to live an incomplete life, it’s just what happened along the way as they became more and more addicted.
This isn’t just one case either. This is what weed does to you. It saps any intrinsic motivation and energy for living and replaces it with a (false) sense of well-being.
Give me clean and sober any day.
No. I hope we never see it legalized. The lawmakers
did that for alcohol many, many years ago for the same
reasons and now look what it has done to so many
people. We have to have rehabilitation programs all
over America , we have sad and hurting relatives of all
the millions of good people that have been killled by drunk drivers, we have millions of families broken and divorced
because of what alcohol has done to them, we have
colleges with student problems because of alcohol abuse,
we have tons and tons of money being spent for alcoholic
products that could be used for so many useful things, and
]I could go on and on. We have condemned cigarettes
because they cause cancer, but alcohol has killed many
more people than cigarettes yet we sell the products
freely in bars, restarurants, grocery stores, and drug stores.
These speaks volumes about why we should never make
another mistake with legalizing brain-altering drugs, like we
once did for alcohol.
hell yeah! more tax 4 the states and would drop crime rate down but it might get ugly and a bunch of idiots would be standing at every red light trying to turn a dollar
Let me know when you run for office & I’ll support you ’till the end of time. Every word from your mouth is golden.
I think you’re absolutely correct. I’d vote to legalize it in a heartbeat.
I’m certain that legalization would lower the crime rate.
Yes, the police SHOULD have better priorities.
Yes, we could live to see it legalized. If we fight for it.
BTW, I haven’t touched the stuff in over 20 years and wouldn’t if it were legal.
in a heartbeat.
Yes. As long as it’s regulated and taxed just like booze. It would cut down on the drug crime and everyone knows we can use the revenue.
I would vote a big YES on that ballot. I have seen first-hand the dangers of alcohol from working in the hospital…marijuana not so much (and it’s not that people don’t do it, trust me).
Plus…the criminals (drug lords) would have less power if they don’t have a way to make money if you could grow the stuff in your garden.
AND…we spend way too much money policing non-violent drug offenders…concentrate on dangerous drugs like meth, coke, etc.
Plus…research has shown that drug use decreases in teens in countries where it is legal (like Amsterdam)
So, many reasons to support it…the ones who don’t are just ignorant or brainwashed, no offense people…but you are.
good point!
no and i dont think it should be legal ither
anti drugs
I would in a cold second. It is one of the most useful plants known to man, and getting a buzz is fairly low down on the list of its uses.
It was the source of most paper for a thousand years, and the Declaration Of Independence was drafted on hemp paper.
Betsy Ross’ flag was made of hemp.
Columbus’ and the Mayflower’s sails were made of hemp (canvas=cannabis)
George Bush Sr’s life was saved by marijuana, because the harness that held his parachute on when he bailed out of his burning plane was made of hemp.
We can make plastics, paints, solvents, textiles, foods, and fuels out of the stalks, seeds, and biomass of hemp, which grows incredibly fast everyplace in the world, and requires but a fraction of the fertilizers and pesticides necessary to grow cotton.
no
No, marijuana is dangerous that’s the whole reason it’s not legal, it’s not only dangerous to you but dangerous to others. As for the drug dealing thing it wouldn’t solve **** it would make it easier to get. Crime is cause by more powerful drugs like meth and speed. Marijuana legalized would equal less high school graduates, less successful people in the U.S., impeding everyday life, and we may end up like Canada and i know no one wants that… Oh and the author needs to get off the weed.
Legalizing marijuana would destroy civilized society as we know it. Before you know it we’ll be asking the same question about ecsatsy, speed, cocaine, meth, and acid. Open 1 door you open 100 more.
no
No, I think you are grandizing if you think it is the solution to the problems you brought up.
no
Don’t you think we have enough problems with drunk drivers, cell phone users and plain old horrible drivers now? Do we really need a bunch of pot smokers too?
Nope, I would never vote for the legalization of Marijuana. I have my reasons. Smoking weed kills your braincells, and it does far more damage than good.
I don’t care if you’re dying from Cancer, they have some good drugs that work just as well.
NO
no to all dope
Nope.
