  • El Guapo:

    Some pros:
    * When marijuana is illegal, there’s no guarantee that what you buy is actually marijuana, and there’s no guarantee that’s it’s safe (or as safe as marijuana can be). Legalizing it would allow it to be regulated, so you know that what you’re buying is actually marijuana, and not something else the drug dealer decided to slip in.
    * Legalizing marijuana would likely eliminate a lot of the crime that occurs in tandem with the illegal drug trade (at least, the part of it that’s related to illegal sale of marijuana).
    * Legalizing marijuana would encourage people to be more open about discussing their use of it with doctors and counselors, which would better enable them to understand its health effects.
    * Those people who choose to smoke marijuana would be able to do so without the risk of having their lives hugely adversely affected by being arrested or put in jail.
    * Allowing people to make their own decisions about their life instead of having the government make decisions for them is, in many cases, a good thing–as a general policy, this improves the quality of life for citizens in a democracy.
    Some cons:
    * Legalizing marijuana might cause more people to use it in excess, which might cause negative health effects.
    * Legalizing marijuana might cause children and adolescents to assume that it is safe for them to smoke it, when in fact there is a lot of evidence to suggest that marijuana use is especially harmful during adolescence.
    * Legalizing marijuana might cause people to underestimate its potency as a drug, so they might assume it is safe to drive while under the influence of marijuana, which could cause injuries and/or deaths.
    * Some people seem to believe that using marijuana is morally wrong (whatever that means), and thus it should be prohibited.

It’s probably evident from my list above that I strongly favor legalizing marijuana. The way I see it, it’s your life and your body, and you’re the one who should be able to make decisions about it.
Obviously, though, once you get behind the wheel of a car while high, then that’s not just your business any more–that should be illegal.

For a list of pros and cons, go to http://www.balancedpolitics.org/marijuan… Personally, I think the strongest arguments are the ones in favor.
    Legalization would:
    - Create thousands of jobs
    - Deal a massive blow to drug cartels, which would suddenly be without 75% of their current income
    - Provide an enormous windfall for the government, which would bring in billions in taxes and SAVE billions more in law enforcement (ending Prohibition played a big part in getting the U.S. out of the Great Depression)
    - Allow police, courts and prisons to focus their resources on DANGEROUS criminals, rather than potheads

  • Leibniz:

Pro: The tax revenue that could be gained from legally selling marijuana would be a great boost to the economy. Beer and Cigarette tax revenue is a great boon for the states. Marijuana tax revenue could be the same.
Pro: The strength/potency of the marijuana would be regulated and the drug would thus be safer and its affects more predictable (sometimes pot dealers lace their pot with other crap)
Pro: Our prisons are full of people who violated drug charges and a great deal of these are marijuana related charges (you can easily get stats on this). Our prisons are overcrowded and underfunded. Making marijuana legal would decrease that burden some.

the phrase “reasonable reasons” is a tad redundant. Nevertheless, I shall proceed to answer the answer in the plainest plain terms that are possibly possible.
    Pros:
Really I can’t think of any other than the sheer recreation factor.
    Cons:
Marijuana has twice the tar as cigarettes
Marijuana has hallucinogenic, upping, and downing properties
    Marijuana creates a psychological addiction
Marijuana users are statistically more likely to try other drugs
When marijuana is used after liquor, the impairing effects of the alcohol are increased threefold.

  • Caryl M:

Not really an answer, but I did see ‘Super High Me’ on G4tv not long ago and it had some interesting things to say on the subject. Check the wiki for it for a little information. Not 10 reasons for or against, but it’s something to start with.
Another fun factoid that a senator was talking about was that if it were legalized, they could tax it so the government would be making money on it instead of gangs and drug dealers, thus marijuana-related crime drops.

  • GreyLife:
